Digital teamlinks demo diskette

I recently got some old diskettes, and sure enough I was lucky to find this gem a ‘virus free’ disk, the Team Computing demo disk.

So naturally it’s MS-DOS based, as that is all that was left in the early 1990’s.

And it’s chock full of vintage networking pitches, as Digital was trying desperatly to get people to buy their Enterprise software for being that all in one of file/print sharing, email and business process automation.

And of course it touts over and over again ‘open standards’ although I’m suspecting none of them really are that open, nor surviving.

Did it go anywhere? Â Did anyone actually use it?

It sounds like a somewhat useful all in one thing that I’m sure cost far far far too much money. Â And of course, in 1997 there was Microsoft Exchange 5.5 which basically killed everything.

I’ve only found a copy of Pathworks 7.1a on Ebay many many years ago, which I’ve used to get Windows NT onto Hecnet. Â That’s as much ‘Digitial for Windows’ software as I’ve used.

I recently discovered this youtube channel by Kim Justice. Â She does quite a few video documentaries about retro games, and the like. Â I found these two quite interesting:

The history of US Gold was quite interesting, along with her documentary on Ocean

And of course this video about theÂ ZX Spectrum tape wars.

I had a Commodore 64, and although I did have a 1541 disk drive first, I did later manage to get a datacasette, and on rare occasion I would pick up a Zzap64 and did quite enjoy the whole idea of a covertape. Â The tradition continues in the UK & EU with cover discs, which I pick up on occasion in Hong Kong.

Welcome to the internet…

I don’t do advertising, as I know I don’t get that much in the way of traffic. Â If anyone cared it’s just over 1.7Â million hits a year (break it down, it’s not much! Â Were only talking about slightly more than three hits every minute!). Â But I saw that my Apache on Windows NT 3.1 is averaging 100 hits a day, and I saw that I’d been scraped and mirrored on 126kr.com ..Oddly enough they didn’t scrape the Apache site.

Very odd.

First I was pissed, but you know as they say you can’t keep anything original on the internet, so just embrace it. Â Inadvertently they do link back to the NT Apache, which then links back to me. Â I guess I only care that there may be other things that readers may find interesting that 126kr hasn’t mirrored yet.

Oh well.

Disk command errors

I forgot just how crap pci ide controllers and disks can be.

I installed using Qemu 0.9 and having it drive the disk directly. Â Naturally, MS-DOS works fine.

ifctfvax.harhan.org/QuasijarusÂ Archive.org kind of has a snapshot, but nothing for the files.

I put what I have onto sourceforge, since they have all my other unix stuff online…

Maybe this will work, maybe it won’t.

I know one thing right off is that the quake server status is ‘mixed content’ aka it’s retrieved over http.

The new version of Chrome is going to start alerting to non HTTPS sites, so it’s only a matter of time before everyone else starts to require it.. Sigh.
