On the talk of Europe & Tapes…

I recently discovered this youtube channel by Kim Justice.  She does quite a few video documentaries about retro games, and the like.  I found these two quite interesting:

The history of US Gold was quite interesting, along with her documentary on Ocean

And of course this video about the ZX Spectrum tape wars.

I had a Commodore 64, and although I did have a 1541 disk drive first, I did later manage to get a datacasette, and on rare occasion I would pick up a Zzap64 and did quite enjoy the whole idea of a covertape.  The tradition continues in the UK & EU with cover discs, which I pick up on occasion in Hong Kong.

Hitting it big time: aka content scrapers

Welcome to the internet…

I don’t do advertising, as I know I don’t get that much in the way of traffic.  If anyone cared it’s just over 1.7 million hits a year (break it down, it’s not much!  Were only talking about slightly more than three hits every minute!).  But I saw that my Apache on Windows NT 3.1 is averaging 100 hits a day, and I saw that I’d been scraped and mirrored on 126kr.com ..Oddly enough they didn’t scrape the Apache site.

content-theftVery odd.

First I was pissed, but you know as they say you can’t keep anything original on the internet, so just embrace it.  Inadvertently they do link back to the NT Apache, which then links back to me.  I guess I only care that there may be other things that readers may find interesting that 126kr hasn’t mirrored yet.

Oh well.

Adding some SSL via Let’s Encrypt

Maybe this will work, maybe it won’t.

I know one thing right off is that the quake server status is ‘mixed content’ aka it’s retrieved over http.

The new version of Chrome is going to start alerting to non HTTPS sites, so it’s only a matter of time before everyone else starts to require it.. Sigh.

URL shortners & short domains

I needed to get some business cards, and the usual thing is to use QR codes that have a tiny URL name, that then redirect to your real web site.  Easy, right?

Well, most people use ‘public’ servers like bit.ly & friends.  In china many people I do business with use 1688.com .  But this got me thinking, 1688 is a FOUR-letter domain, unlike any of the three letter ones that seem to be more common. Â I know all the one, two and three letter domains are all gone, but are there any four-letter domains?

Turns, out YES there are.

I used this site:

Domain Name Soup .com

And I was able to hammer though their UI, and find one, and register it with my usual registrar.

*This isn’t an AD, I’m not being paid to say any of this.  I was more so surprised that I could not only find a four letter domain, but it’s the initials of my wife’s business.

The best part is that I could use YOURLS, a free PHP+Mysql app to quickly and easily manage the redirects.
