Since people have been asking, does it work with Qemu 1.0.1? Â And the answer, sadly is ….
sadly…
no.
As you can see the primary error code is 0x000000c4
0x0000000000000091
0x000000000000000f
0xfffff802cc92e880
0x0000000000000000
And that is about it….. Â And of course keeping in mind that Qemu hasn’t been able to boot a 64bit version of Windows since 0.9.0 and Windows XP x64/Windows 2003.
KVM is able to run Windows 8 DP x64.
I Didn’t try Windows 8 CP …
I guess that’s not surprising there has been quite a LOT of development behind KVM as of late, and I think win32 qemu is left way behind.
I did quite enjoy KVM via proxmox/ve.. I found it very responsive, fast, and down right lightweight. Not to mention easier to deploy than VMWare (no insane licensing server) and CHEAP/FREE…!
Windows 8 x64 require 2048 MB RAM. Qemu only supports 2047.
Try 32bit version of Windows 8, it requires 1024 MB.
See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/download for detailed requirements.
Qemu can give far more ram on 64bit capable platforms. I’m pretty sure Qemu won’t run Windows 8 on the 64bit mode, just as it won’t run 2003/XP, Vista or 7. And to be honest, I really don’t see Windows 8 going anywhere anytime soon, 95 at least had a ‘point’ Just wait until all these RT users find out they can’t run anything on their tablets.
Nowadays qemu runs Windows 8 just fine. Thought I’d throw that out there since this was one of the first results for ‘ qemu “windows xp” ‘
KVM, sure, but I highly doubt vanilla Qemu.
Sorry, I didn’t realize before this was for Qemu in Windows. I tried it and it was abysmally slow — I aborted the XP guest installation in frustration.
Yeah, my good results are with the KVM accelerator in Linux, and I’ve used both Windows 8 32 and 64 bit successfully (moreso with 32-bit).
Anyway, I’ll stop being a ‘necromancer’. ^_^
works fine with qemu-kvm vs. 1.6.1
too bad it doesn’t work in qemu.
Can anyone tell me the exact command line for qemu?
When I try to install win8 in qemu 1.7.0 (running on linux),
I get a pop-up window saying
X:\windows\system32>rem …..
The system cannot find the path specified.
[Error] The boot disk cannot be found.
Press any key to continue . . .
Then qemu restarts.
Here’s what I tried:
qemu -drive file=hd.img,if=scsi,media=disk –drive file=cd.iso,if=scsi,media=cdrom,readonly -enable-kvm -netdev user,id=hostnet0 -device virtio-net-pci,romfile=,netdev=hostnet0 -m 2048 -M pc-0.13 -cpu core2duo,+lahf_lm,+sse4.1,+xtpr,+cx16,+tm2,+est,+vmx,+ds_cpl,+pbe,+tm,+ht,+ss,+acpi,+ds
It looks like you are mixing KVM and Qemu… Although I really don’t know as I haven’t messed with KVM on a user level.
I am trying to do dual boot windows on ARM device using QEMU .
I tried with Windows XP in QEMU 1.7, it seems to be successful. But the booting of windows 8 is not success. we were able to give 1016MB RAM allocation. Reboot happens continuously & blue log comes and goes…
