Qemu 1.6 officially released!

As always the changelog is here, and the sourcecode can be downloaded here.

The big changes for me is that this version seems pretty peppy on OS X, and of course it’ll run older PowerPC OS X Guest OSes.

 

Fun times indeed.

  1. This still doesn’t include Hervé’s IBM 43p PReP emulation, so we need download sources and dependencies, download the patch, apply the patch, compile dependencies, compile the source… maybe not so hard for linux users, but for win32 users like me… damn, what a pain in the ass.

    Also, for some reason, WinNT 3.1 DC390 drivers still don’t recognize QEMU DC390 SCSI emulation, at least in Win32 builds. Some users report that the thing work well, but i never could be able to use it to install Winnt 3.1 directly from CD.

    • Hmm I actually met Hervé in Hong Kong, but he kind of slid off the radar after that day… 😐

      I’d be excited to see how his stuff works on 1.6 as the big/little endian stuff seems to have merged?

      • Few days ago, in the link that i posted in Tenox TP850 post, i just discovered something really useful: The real Power Series 850 firmware image, along with the updated one for the Thinkpad 850.

        Giving a little check, seems that both RS/6000 43p and the Power Series 850/ThinkPad 850 uses the same type of firmware, the “Personal Power Firmware” which can run WinNT PPC, Solaris PPC, and AIX in all the RS/6000 PReP machine line, but for some reason (maybe drivers, maybe some firmware microcode changed) only Power Series/Thinkpad can run the mythic OS/2 PPC. Since all RS/6000 machines share the same firmware type, and there aren’t many differences in the HW platform, i wonder if with some little modifications Hervé’s QEMU patch could run the Power Series 850 firmware too, so we can finally run OS/2 PPC in our modern machines.

        With respect to run the older OSX versions in QEMU, just remember that OSX 10 and 10.1 still require load the “Mac OS ROM” file from the installation media/mac system partition, just like MacOS 9, and i don’t know if OpenBIOS already supports such behavior.
