<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I saw this video and I was like sold! I have this PowerMac 6400/180 so I figured this would be good. The problem was my network card was acting up so I figured instead of troubleshooting it I’ll just format it and go from there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">the machine is very much an Old World Macintosh, so that limits me from OS X. It&#8217;s 603ev CPU it’s not all that advanced either. I have an 8.1 ISO that I’ve been using under 68k emulation but the limit it has is old multimedia stuff ins t 68k compatible as nobody would imagine emulation putting 68k at speeds above a gigahertz. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I went looking for a 8.6 ISO, and that is where the fun hit me again that many so-called ISO images aren’t. Rather they are giant floppy disk images with the media headers and/or partition tables being obliterated. As an ISO they don&#8217;t detect at all, and as a giant floppy, of course they don&#8217;t boot <a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/2023/10/23/since-there-had-been-some-confusion-on-how-to-install-macos-9-on-os-x/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">as MacOS checks if it is on read-only</a> media.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-scaled.jpeg"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-1024x768.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-13793" srcset="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-768x576.jpeg 768w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0404-400x300.jpeg 400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">This ISO isn&#8217;t an ISO</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">very annoying </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I did manage to finally find one that does work however!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-scaled.jpeg"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-1024x768.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-13790" srcset="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-768x576.jpeg 768w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0400-400x300.jpeg 400w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">working ISO</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I forgot where I found it though. I did save it to archive.org, since I have another 5 versions of this downloaded, none of which will boot. <a href="https://archive.org/details/mac-os-8.6-working-iso">https://archive.org/details/mac-os-8.6-working-iso</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I should also add the MacOS 8.1 CD-ROM image Ive been using as again,l I have the same issue where so many are headderless &#8216;floppies&#8217; and not actual CD-ROM&#8217;s that don&#8217;t work in <a href="https://sourceforge.net/projects/cockatrice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cockatrice III</a> or an actual Mac using <a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/2023/02/19/a-wild-macintosh-plus-appears/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BlueSCSI</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="556" src="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/MacOS-8.1-installer-on-Cockatrice-III-1024x556.png" alt="" class="wp-image-13803" srcset="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/MacOS-8.1-installer-on-Cockatrice-III-1024x556.png 1024w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/MacOS-8.1-installer-on-Cockatrice-III-300x163.png 300w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/MacOS-8.1-installer-on-Cockatrice-III-768x417.png 768w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/MacOS-8.1-installer-on-Cockatrice-III-500x272.png 500w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/MacOS-8.1-installer-on-Cockatrice-III.png 1436w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">MacOS 8.1 CD-ROM on Cockatrice III</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sorry the image shows in black &amp; white, but as you can see from the CD-ROM background it is in fact booted from the CD-ROM. You can download it from here: <a href="https://archive.org/details/mac-os-8.1-iso_202401" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">https://archive.org/details/mac-os-8.1-iso_202401</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In no time, I was able to get online only to find that the power Mac plugin’s seem to be unavailable for anything and unsupported.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-scaled.jpeg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-1024x768.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-13794" srcset="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-768x576.jpeg 768w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_0401-400x300.jpeg 400w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">old netscape website</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">but the rendition of the old Netscape page was a treat!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now I do have a Windows Surface RT tablet, and sure enough pluggin the proxy values, and YES the video site does work!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="720" style="aspect-ratio: 1280 / 720;" width="1280" controls src="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/out2.mp4"></video><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Warpstream on Windows RT</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Very cool! So it turns out Protoweb can actually save all those old devices that work fine enough, but not fine enough for &#8216;Modern platforms&#8217;.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While I&#8217;m writing this, I&#8217;m listening to <a href="https://vpsland.superglobalmegacorp.com/low/neuromancer/neuromancer.html">Neuromancer</a> via WinAmp &amp; the ancient <a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/wordpress/category/speex/">Speex plugin</a> I had updated about 8 years ago.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1362" height="650" src="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/x86-node-running-on-Windows-RT-8.0.png" alt="" class="wp-image-8809" srcset="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/x86-node-running-on-Windows-RT-8.0.png 1362w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/x86-node-running-on-Windows-RT-8.0-300x143.png 300w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/x86-node-running-on-Windows-RT-8.0-768x367.png 768w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/x86-node-running-on-Windows-RT-8.0-1024x489.png 1024w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/x86-node-running-on-Windows-RT-8.0-1200x573.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1362px) 100vw, 1362px" /><figcaption>x86 node running on Windows RT</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I took my Surface, and downgraded it to the North American 8.0 version without updates, added my MS ID, and from there ran the jailbreak and <a href="https://sourceforge.net/projects/win86emu/files/Original%20Files/Binaries/x86node_-_installed.zip/download">win86emu (sometimes called x86node)</a>&nbsp;and from there I was able to run some simple Win32 exe&#8217;s.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even though I had done a simple cut down QuakeWorld port with the GDI only display, using win86emu it&#8217;ll run the 80386 build as well.&nbsp; while I haven&#8217;t thrown much at it, I&#8217;m just amazed that so far things are working.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you think that between the jail-break to unlock the ability to run programs combined with a CPU translator, and Win32 to Win32 thunk / translation program, why on earth did this thing ship without it?&nbsp; It&#8217;s amazing that between trying to launch a platform with no inertial for applications after Android &amp;&nbsp; Apple were selling millions of hardware units, and billions of software units, and cutting the past applications.&nbsp; It&#8217;s just crazy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And then Microsoft did their normal thing when something goes wrong, which is basically end it, and destroy all evidence it existed.&nbsp; There is no Windows 10 upgrade for the Surface, even though Windows 10 IOT has been hacked to run from a USB stick on the Surface, but it&#8217;s insanely slow.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I figured since this is kind of hard to find I&#8217;ll just mirror it on<a href="https://sourceforge.net/projects/win86emu/"> Source Forge&#8230; along with the source</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I had to pay another $15 for the charger.&nbsp; I should have run away, but I&#8217;m a sucker.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, there are basically NO apps, but <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-compile-and-port-win32-apps-for-windows-rt/">thanks to this little guide</a>&#8230;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1365" height="762" src="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/QuakeWorld-on-WindowsRT.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8793" srcset="https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/QuakeWorld-on-WindowsRT.jpg 1365w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/QuakeWorld-on-WindowsRT-300x167.jpg 300w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/QuakeWorld-on-WindowsRT-768x429.jpg 768w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/QuakeWorld-on-WindowsRT-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https://virtuallyfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/QuakeWorld-on-WindowsRT-1200x670.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1365px) 100vw, 1365px" /><figcaption><em>QuakeWorld on Windows RT</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was able to port over some trivial stuff, the usual things like hello world, Infocom Interpreter, a f2c build of Dungeon, then I went with something I&#8217;d been messing around an old GDI driver for WinQuake that builds with the NT 3.5 SDK (finally got it!).&nbsp; So with a few minor tweeks here it is cross compiled from my x86_64 to the surface.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last time I talked about the Surface was <a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/wordpress/2012/11/08/so-i-got-to-play-with-a-surface-yesterday/">nearly 6 years ago</a>&#8230;&nbsp; The platform&#8217;s fate was pretty much sealed on day one.&nbsp; With no open Win32 API it shunned traditional devs, and with some completely new and insane model it was such a hurdle for new devs, why put so much effort into such an old tired company like Microsoft?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I figured for the price of a good lunch it&#8217;d be a fun toy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Too bad the speakers don&#8217;t work though.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know the window on Windows 8.1 apps is closing soon.&nbsp; I should put something together for the dead platform.&nbsp; Maybe for phone too.&nbsp; But for tonight, it was kinda fun doing a copy/paste attack to then run unsigned EXE&#8217;s on the device.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I might upload the tool chain later, but at the moment getting Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate is a breeze.</p>

<p>Just before the tidal wave comes in on the Windows 8 launch, let me just spell out one thing&#8230; Windows 8 RT will *NOT* run any existing Windows applications.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know why we even have to go back down this road, but it&#8217;ll be Windows NT on the MIPS or PowerPC all over again.</p>
<p>And to be too honest, the price is just too damned high for what it is, and that is an evolutionary dead end. &nbsp;Expect there to be some kind of post Christmas fire sale, once people find out they can&#8217;t play minecraft or sims on it.</p>
<p>But apparently it comes with Microsoft Office (Word &amp; Excel?) no idea if it includes PowerPoint &amp; Outlook.. &nbsp; I guess the one safe thing is that it won&#8217;t run x86 exploits/buffer overflows, so maybe this is a good PHB, &#8216;mom&#8217; device.</p>
<p>Me? &nbsp;I&#8217;m still using a 1st gen iPad.</p>
