those managers always suck as they never can stay in sync with everything, especially when I add custom updates. There is nothing to gain by not learning the simple cli flags, and just get a handle on the actual use.

I'd be locked out of the -rhapsody busmouse addition, or the UDP networking, assuming it even supported version like 0.8/0.9 which many people look down on, except of course the raw benchmarks that show that GCC screwed up big time with the breaking changes going from GCC 3 to 4.

The larger problem with Darwin is that Net/Open/Free exist, and they can barely hold onto their niches. Not to mention there was hope that Apple could curate some kind of pipeline to take in 3rd party stuff, but there was no real integration, even to now.

Much like when I'd originally built some Darwin images, they needlessly to say didn't set the world on fire. C'est la vie.

I suspect you already know this, but for anyone not familiar, there is a decent GUI to simplify creation and administration of QEMU VMs. Virt Manager:

https://virt-manager.org/

Not able to confirm right now but IIRC (If I Remember Correctly), creating virtual disks is possible in the GUI, as well as many other tasks.

I have never used Rhapsody seriously, but did use NeXT(Open)Step on actual M68K hardware, install Open step i386 on an Athlon 32 bit system with ISA slots to accommodate compatible SCSI and sound cards, as well as in the Mac OS version of Virtual PC.

At this point all of those systems seem to have no update path, since large chunks of the code is closed source and may remain that way forever, which is sad, because it was revolutionary back in the day. E.g. Display Postscript, Object Oriented programming, etc.

Though I'm also sad that Open source Darwin never went anywhere, even with X11 it has most of the rest of the good stuff. I always wonder if Mac OS 10.4+X11+packages (ala macports, fink, homebrew, etc) could appeal to those who do not wish to be subjected to either MS or Apple corporate shenanigans. Aside from being behind cutting edge Linux, it is a solid foundation.
