Those connection things were such a PITA when we had those stealth Windows 95 NetWare servers, as those road warrior types always seemed to have it enabled, and when they went out for lunch, or to the hotel, they always basically logged everyone else out. It was also funny as they always got high end laptops as 'it was so slow in the office'.. .like no wonder when you are your nearest server for a few hundred people.

Oh yeah. Even passive-server apps.

I mean, the last new _assembly code_ I shipped was a patch to keep bloody Novell from randomly closing server connections out from underneath us without notification. "Surprise! No more connection! See you tomorrow!"

On the DOS MTA we ended up adding in a reboot-upon-network-layer-hang detector. That wasn't me, though. I was so offended but the customer base loved it so...

Netware TCP stack was standard 4.3 BSD and good for a lot
more than just SNMP alerts.
If you don't know nothing about Netware, then don't write about it.
Snowflake generation is playing with VM's, discovers Netware,
plays a little bit and already thinks he is an expert...yeah, sure...

I should have added an incident where we had some 'very smart' consultants that spent so much time installing and tuning an Oracle on NetWare deployment that was incredibly unstable. As soon as the bosses weren't looking we dumped the data, and reloaded it on NT, and never looked back.

NetWare was a death trap when it came to applications.

You left out the part where Novell spent like two years telling its customer base that NT was "more of an application server, what you need is file and print" and then server applications suddenly mattered and Novell's sales force had spent two years telling its own customer base that if they wanted an applications server, they wanted Windows NT. xD

(This was merely one of the many ways Novell shot itself in the face repeatedly during the 1990s. I have stories.)
