ReBirth RB-338 v.2.0

I’m not a big sequencer as I’m just terrible when it comes to music. But apparently on Wikipedia Propellerhead had set the download free, although download links now are inoperable.

After a lot of googling around I found it split up on one of those annoying download sites. So I spent the night waiting for stupid timers, training an AI to sport automobiles & intersections (lol redlight camera training), and as a reward I got the download.

ReBirth on Qemu under Windows 95

I installed it on the floppy version of Windows 95 on Qemu where it needed IE 5.01, Direct X, Winsock 2 & Windows 95 SP1 updates (among others…) and yes it works!

Included in the downloads is some assists so you can run it on Windows 10 x64 if you are so inclined.

Also there is some MacOS X images, although I haven’t tested them. I need to drag my G5 into my office to try it, but it’s getting late, and I want to go home.

I put the download up over on archive.org. You can download it here:

Update:

Since this time my upload to archive.org has been deleted. I was also trying to remove all the google accounts I have and when I changed the email address away from google all my uploads became ‘unknown’ so maybe they are hidden? Anyways over on Wikipeida just use citation #19, and you can download it there.

  1. Careful, those aren’t Mac OS X images! ReBirth was never ported to OS X. I’ve never tried running it under Classic but it might work. Better to get a G4 or anything else that will boot directly into System 7.6MacOS 9.1.

IIRC it ran on PowerPC 601s but I have never personally run ReBirth on anything slower than a 180MHz 603e which had lots of horsepower to spare.

    • Which makes sense, as I didn’t see how a 1997 product supported an OS that came out in 2001. I have Classic running on my G5, so it ought to work. I hope.

  2. Huh. Funnily enough, the 64-bit patch is the one I made shortly after Propellerhead made Rebirth freely available. Never thought I’d see it floating around still – I barely tested the Re-Wire plugin using ACID Pro because I was still very much a noob when it came to using it. Actually, I still am šŸ˜‰

Amazing to see it still surviving on the net – it was quickly chucked together in an hour or so; from what I recall, it was just a repacked installed and renaming a DLL to allow everything to play nicely. That and converting the WRI readme to an RTF.

  3. Wow, thanks! šŸ™‚ Minimal requirements:
    NT4 or Win95

Installed on: bare 480MB ide vhdd as a virtualbox guest, sb16, nomidi, original NT4SP1 OEM installkit.

Before that I’ve performed only one unsuccessful attempt: latest nt3.51 vm from winworldpc, and after rb338 install at first start: “gfo nt4+/win95/98 or better” message appeared. What a f! šŸ˜›

Not just nostalgic mood, it is still usable nowadays. However, never ever tried on powerpc classic nor osxclassicenv. TBD

  4. First sorry my bad enlish.
I just want to thank you.
Looked around and didn’t find where to download, till i saw your link šŸ™‚

  5. I still have this on a CD-ROM the one from when Propellerhead had the ‘Rebirth museum’ referred to above. Obviously doesn’t run on 64-bit, but I’ve had it on a Windows Vista machine for years.

    • Hello mate, do you still have this?

I grew up listening to songs from the Rebirth archive and I can’t find them again for love nor money.

        • I’m really sorry to bother you but I already have that on my list but it’s stuck on Downloading Metadata for some reason – I guess either there’s a technical issue at my end or I keep missing the seeders being switched on.

Would you be kind enough to make a new upload? I’ll seed after I can actually get the files

  6. My apologies there seems to have been some confusion on my behalf here.

I’ve got Rebirth working on my 64-bit Windows installation already – what I’m actually looking for is the official archive of RBS songs.

I was able to locate an archive of 4000 tracks but it’s missing a lot of the tracks I remember from the original archive. If anyone reading has any idea where to find them, I’d be hugely grateful.

    Thank you!

    • Unfortunately that one I couldn’t locate properly. I was hoping it’d show up on some shovelware CD.. It’s annoyingly hard to track down anything of the late 90’s, 00’s and beyond as it’s all too easy to get that era erradicated. Case in point UTZOO and how one bored sysadmin from the 80’s that posted little to nothing of interest has fought tooth and nail to get the archive scrubbed.

    • go for torrent searching, i’ve seen some big-ass whith lots of tracks and mods. They are not 100% online, so you probably must leave it on downloading for about 1-2 months, so probably someone could go on seed and let you download them.

  7. I’ve got Rebirth 338 worked nice on Windows 8.1 PRO x64 without any issues.
All you need is a WinHLP patch for Win 8.1 x64 in order to show a help for a really first launch of a program.
