I don't know what to think. I have an OSnews account from 2005 but was visiting it much earlier. I always wanted it to be a site full of practitioners or students who loved the technical details, kinda like lwn. That never really happened; obviously a site that loses money can't hire engineers to write articles, and linking to news sites just doesn't go that deep. It always frustrated me as someone employed in the field that I couldn't contribute more without revealing corporate secrets, but it's being able to communicate details that makes the community worthwhile.

Today I've ended up spending more time on https://lobste.rs which has an invite only membership system that basically works by logging onto IRC, sharing a portfolio of work, prove it really was you who did the work, and then somebody gives you an account. It may be a high bar but it means comments on the site are from real practitioners who actually want to understand exactly what happened and what's "behind the news" rather than just the headlines. Unfortunately many of the people there are operating on technologies I know nothing about, but that's the story of IT generally (the technology spectrum is much wider than it used to be.)

I hope OSnews recovers, but I fear that it has been struggling to have a vibrant community for a while and this may just do it in.
