In reply to <a href="https://virtuallyfun.com/2018/07/12/sim-life-for-windows/comment-page-1/#comment-199900">Chris M.</a>.

So i loaded up otvdm-v0.2.zip which is their last release, and Sim City bombs out with:

err:int:DOSVM_InitSegments 859: DOSVM_InitSegments!

Kind of a shame. But Sim Earth and Sim Life do run.. sort of. The menu's don't drop down, so unless you know the keyboard shortcuts they don't do anything. But it's pretty damned amazing!

Personally I run Windows 3.1x in DOSBox, mostly because of the better sound and graphics driver support. Speaking of WINE, I came across this project that is similar to Win3mu that can run some Win16 binaries on x64 versions of Windows. It uses winelib for the Win16 API handling and a VM: https://github.com/otya128/winevdm

It runs some of the Windows Entertainment Pack games without a problem, but bombs out on others. SimLife might be a bit much for it.

I like qemu for it's portability and it's ability to support multiple disk formats.

That said I use VMware player on Windows, Fusion on OS X, and KVM and Qemu again on Linux.

Of course there is pcem and about a dozen other emulators to lean on with SIMH being a favorite non pc emulator.

In this case I'm using Qemu as I could quickly extract the installed copy of SimLife and run it under crossover, my favorite Wine on OS X. Boxed wine is cool, but it's not as mature as a native Wine.

I hope this helps, but if you want to know more, just ask.

Can you tell me a bit about your choice of QEMU as your Win3.1 platform vs Virtualbox or VMWare Player (or even DOSBox)?
I'm interested in how support is in various platforms for older OSes such as that.
