Even as of now, 2026, this still helps me out!
Almost the same setup, but just i have the distro QEMU 4.2 on ubuntu20.04, run a nested esxi5.5 (lean, least resources with web host client), but scratched my head for whole night why 32bit nor 64bit L2 VM guests were unable to power-on.
until find this thread and learnt about this secret flag - vmx.allowNested=TRUE
