Happy new year!

I thought I’d go ahead and see if I could get Net/2 to build on my own.

Net/2

Net/2

Well it compiles, and tries to boot….   Sadly there is no adb or gdb support.  How on earth did people debug this stuff then?  I’m not sure where the crash location is, or what to do about it.  But I thought this was really cool.

I’ve also tried to track down 4.4BSD encumbered, which was released around the same time as the 4.4BSD-Lite1 which was after the AT&T vs BSDi/CSRG thing..  Or even the release that parallels the Net/2 release…

Anyways, happy 2014!

  1. IIRC from toying around with 386BSD with a built in kernel debugger, lots of #ifdef DEBUG and dumps to the swap device. All the best for 2014!

  2. Happy New Year! A few years ago an embedded developer said to me “I don’t see why I’d need this gdb thing you’ve added, I’ve been doing this for 20 years and printf() works just fine.” so maybe you need to take a page from that dinosaur’s book 🙂

  3. From what system did you travel back in time to bootstrap this btw? (please don’t tell me you went berserk and took the original DOS/NASM/TURBO C route)

    • Nah, first 386BSD 0.1 pl24… and for completeness, I installed the first part of BSD 0.1 in Boch, removed 0.1 files, copied in the 0.0 files and built Net/2 straight from 0.0 (well after adding [,sort,grep,test).. with the i386 directory taken from 0.0 it’ll at least print some stuff, crash after the NPX and reboot… with the default Net/2 i386 directory it just reboots too quick I don’t see any dmesg activity 😐
