Hi,

Is the splashscreen part of a random IBM utility on Windows NT4 or part of the 860 firmware? If’s it’s part of a software could your please point me to it? I just love this picture and would like to extract it!

In reply to Tobis87. On a server for sure, but this is a laptop! But then again I can always use it in text mode on the console and do VNC or remote X session as you suggested. I'm definitely start with AIX 4.1 as a system that I'm most fond of. I used it for quite a while on Apple Network Servers.

Here is a little part that I’ve left out. I have sold the 850 ThinkPad to Michal Necasek from http://www.os2museum.com/ and left 860 for myself. So happens Michal is in love with both OS/2 and Solaris. I’m sure he will be writing some interesting articles with lots of pictures on both. I have seen some of his screenshots – awesome! I’m myself more interested with NT and AIX so for now I’ve decided to stay with NT and push some software ports on it. Keep checking his blog for OS/2 and Solaris PPC content! I also used a serial console to install AIX, I have no video card.

After installation you can use CDE over VNC:

Even over SSH:

AIX 5.1 will run over serial console only. There is no support for GT20 in 5.x. See here: http://www.tecnopolis.ca/aixtp/tpaix43.html – I will definitely try it though at some point.

I bought a 7043-140 IBM RS/6000 43P Model 140 machine last month and it can run AIX 5.1 even with Firefox 3.6.

It was shipped with:
PowerPC 604e 332MHz
1 MB Synchronous L2 Cache
2 x 128 MB EDO-RAM
1 x Advanced SerialRAID Plus Adapter
1 x IBM PCI Token-Ring Adapter

And I added:
4 x 128 MB EDO-RAM (uff, 60€ each)
2 x 18 GB Seagate Cheetah (LVM Mirroring RAID-1)
1 x IBM 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PCI Adapter (nmon shows ~6 mbps)
